About the BESiDE project

BESiDE [The Built Environment for Social inclusion through the Digital Economy] is a multidisciplinary research group.  Our goal is to help the transformation of the network of stakeholders involved in care environments into a virtuous cycle of research and design improvement, in which all are motivated to pursue improvement in the built environment for older adults. Led by Professor Vicki Hanson, we include researchers from Computing, Design, and Healthcare at the University of Dundee and from Computing at Newcastle University.

Understanding how to create environments which support older adults in maintaining their quality of life long after transitioning to a care home environment remains a key challenge facing architects and designers. We are carrying out research in care homes to tackle this challenge.  We are giving a voice to the users of these environments, measuring physical activity in relation to health, and tracing and modeling movement within the homes to generate new research knowledge and transfer that knowledge into professional practices.
