Mr Gerry Farquharson

Advisory Board Member

I am an RIAS/ ARB registered architect with over 25 years experience spanning conservation, civic, arts, commercial, retail, industrial, healthcare, residential, infrastructure, community, education and master-planning projects. I hold BSc & BArch(hons) degrees in Architecture, a Post Graduate qualification in International Development and a Master's Degree (with distinction) in 'Advanced Sustainability of the Built Environment'. I was previously a Senior Associate with one of Scotland's foremost design practices and am currently Director of my own Architectural Practice. I am a committee member of the Dundee Institute of Architects, have previously sat on the Competitions Committee of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland and am a former Board Member of Dundee Public Art Programme. An RIAS accredited 'Sustainability Architect', I have produced low cost, zero energy house designs shortlisted in international competition and I lecture regularly on Sustainable Design at various Universities across Scotland. Previous Projects have been critically acknowledged as exemplars of sustainable design and are the subject of various published articles. The BREEAM 'Excellent' rated Hillcrest Headquarters in Dundee project in particular received a clutch of prestigious awards including; Scottish Design Awards 2012 (Sustainable Design), British Council for Offices (Scotland) 2012, Dundee Civic Trust Award 2012, RIBA Andrew Doolan Award (Special Mention) 2011, DIA Supreme Award 2011 and DIA Best Commercial Building 2011.

My interest in BESiDE is firstly in the environment -wellbeing- performance relationship, and secondly in providing a practice perspective and access to the Architectural Profession.
