Prof. John Richards

John joined the Computer Science research staff at IBM's Thomas J. Watson Research Center after receiving a Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology. Since then he has performed research, advanced technology, and management roles, creating award-winning systems in support of interpersonal communications, ubiquitous computing, and web accessibility. In the newly formed Watson Group in IBM he is applying Lean Startup and Design Thinking techniques to the creation of new cognitive computing applications. His technical and professional contributions have been recognized by the Human Factors Society, the Association of Computing Machinery, the British Computer Society, ACM SIGPLAN, and several disability advocacy organizations. He is an ACM Fellow, a member of the IBM Academy of Technology, a Fellow of the British Computer Society, and a Senior Member of IEEE. He is also an Honorary Professor in the School of Computing at the University of Dundee.

BESiDE aims to improve the lives of care home residents, their families, and their caregivers through novel applications of technology and the creation of new models of care home design. This is a truly exciting prospect and has the potential to make life richer and more satisfying for many.
